Spanish Trail Suite (full orchestra)

Format

Commissioned by the Orchestra of Southern Utah, Cedar City, Utah with support from the National Endowment for the Arts, this 35-minute symphony composed by Marshall McDonald and Steven Sharp Nelson musically depicts the triumphs and hardships experienced by those who traveled the Old Spanish Trail --the longest trail in the American West stretching over 1,100 miles. In 2009, it was performed by the China Philharmonic Orchestra and recorded on Marshall McDonald and Steven Sharp Nelson's album American Journey.

The Spanish Trail Suite is composed of four movements:

  1. Sunrise - tribute to the Native Americans
  2. Rainstorm - tribute to the trials faced on the trail
  3. Marcha - tribute to the Spanish explorers
  4. Celebration - tribute to the Western pioneers
